Children of Chaos

Been working on a lot of stuff simultaneously (a great method of wasting time faffing about and getting little accomplished!), however I did recently complete the finishing touches on these 10 beastmen.

Through dark rituals and psychic signals I hoped to draw them from the wilderness to serve my Genestealer Cult as expendable troops. Of course being children of chaos, they may very well find themselves distracted by the enticement of slaughter, glory, and tasty manflesh offered by a Realm of Chaos Warband, or getting in the way of adventurers and their loot in dungeons under the old world.

This is one of Chaz Elliott's infamous Snakemen. I was trying to paint it's scales in a pattern similar to an Australian Death Adder snake. Don't think it ended up resembling the real deal much but its acceptable enough to me as evil-fantasy-serpent-man scales. This is the only Snakeman I own, but I can see why they are sought after by collectors. Softly sculpted and somewhat impressionistic, similar to the style of Nick Lund, but packed with lots of cool details. I like how they are dressed in furs to insulate their cold blood!

Bob Olley Beastman. As usual, a weird sculpt that left me a bit uncertain what to do with it. Nevertheless I found the goat-like features, outrageous head-dress, and overall outlandishness appealing.

The fur of this beastman was inspired by a picture of some kind of primate I saw once, I think it was a Golden Lion Tamarin.

Beefman.

And the fur pattern of this bloke was inspired by an african antelope.

Finally I will leave this post with a picture of what's currently in my painting queue.

  1. The second one & Beefman are my pick of the bunch. Your a damn fine hand with the paint brush Mr Cult, a damn fine hand!

I've got about forty of these guys undercoated & awaiting some abuse from my brush. Got four of them done :)

It's always good to see other people's work before you begin, to gives you ideas.

    Cheers.

    1. Cheers! Yeah I find it very useful to see work in progress pics, and people's work benches and stuff like that, I always pick up obscure tricks. Looking forward to see how your beastmen come out!

  2. These are amazing! A varied bunch yet still work so well as a unit. I love the red on the armour of skull faced flail man. Great to see a painted snakeman; very original idea regarding the scheme too. Makes the prospect of continuing my beastman unit a little more easier to swallow now. They can be fun to paint after all!

    1. Thanks, very nice of you to say. Well I had been slowly picking away at these for a long time too, as I had decided to try to paint naturalistic fur patterns, it turned out to be really difficult underneath all those straps and armour!

  3. I love the diverse look of vintage Citadel beastmen: they are truly 'chaotic'. I like that even though you have used some pretty garish colours, you've nevertheless managed to impart a sense of dark gothicism, which seems to characterise all you work, and fits these sculpts wonderfully.

    1. Yeah me too, especially the C27 beastmen are some of my favourites, I think adding some of them to the unit would help add diversity and weirdness, just have to track some down. Thanks!

  4. The antelope was the pick of an excellent bunch for me. Can't wait for the hunter slayers and zoats to get a lick of paint. Keep up the good work, I shall be ripping your paint schemes off shamelessly!

  5. Geez,I want to say the Olley guy is my favourite but they're all outstanding.
The Khorne Champion has a really hideous (good hideous) pose!

    1. Thanks Bruno, yeah one of my favourites too. Bob Olley, what a legend. About the Khorne champion- I think one of Jes Goodwin's remarkable strengths is the ability to subtly convey dynamism, weight and movement using a seemingly static pose, how does he do it?

  6. Impressive batch here, all wonderful really ! Those natural skin and furs with the more fantasy oriented amrours and all is juts perfectly balanced and splendid. The Snakemen are indeed really nice to paint and they give thebest when in talented hands as yours.

    Slow claps.

  9. Once again, amazing and inspirational work. I really like the eye and shoulder tattoos on the beastman. Can't wait to see them in action with (or against!) the Genestealer cult.
